Review of Blade Runner (1982)

No List of Science Fiction, Action or Adventure Films can ever be complete without including Blade Runner in the list. It is one of the finest creations of Ridley Scott.  It is roughly based on Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep by the author Philip K Dick.  The film was not a great success when it was initially released as it was overshadowed by few other sci-fi releases of that time which include Star Trek II: The Wrath of The Khan, The Thing and even more significantly E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial which were also in theaters around the same time.

Ridley Scott, who had earlier gifted the audience with brilliant works like Alien, in 1982 created a marvelous science fiction Blade Runner in 1982. It was one of his best creations. Music By: The compositions for Blade Runner were made by Vangelis. They were melodic dark combination of futuristic synthesizers and classic compositions. Vangelis is an Academy Award winner for the work in Chariots of Fire.

Plot:

Deckard who is a blade runner, must hunt down and eliminate four replicants who have hijacked a ship in space and now have came back to the planet looking for their maker.  In a cyberpunk perspective into the future, a man has evolved a technology to generate replicants, human clones employed to work in the colonies outside Earth though with set lifespans. In Los Angeles, 2019, Deckard is a Blade Runner, a cop who specializes in ending replicants. Actually in retirement, he is compelled to re-enter the force as half a dozen replicants get away from an off world community to Earth.

Best Scene:

The film Blade Runner has got many spectacular scenes which will be remembered even after years. Deckard’s pursuit of Zhora has been really shot very well. Another scene worth remembering is Batty’s meeting with Tyrell. There are many more such fabulous scenes. Even the climax of the Blade Runner has been shot very well.

Box Office: The film was not a great success when it initially released in 1982. However the film withstood the test of time. In the opening weekend, it made a disappointing US $6.15 M and by the end of 1982 it grossed a total of US $27.58 M.

Awards:

The film Blade Runner was nominated for eight BAFTA Awards and won three of them. It won the BAFTA Award for Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design and Best Art Direction. It also won the Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation and London Critic’s Circle Special Achievement Award.

Sequels:

There were three sequels made to the original 1982 Blade Runner. These include Blade Runner 2: The Edge of Human (1995),Blade Runner 3: Replicant Night (1996) and Blade Runner 4: Eye and Talon (2000).

The film is a remake of the 1985 movie Fright Night. A young boy feels his new neighbor is a vampire. He takes the help of a self proclaimed vampire killer to deal with the situation.

4. Paranormal Activity 3

Ariel Schulman and Henry Joost have directed Paranormal Activity 3.

The film is based in the year 1988. Little girls Kristi and Katie become friends with an invisible entity which stays in their house.

5. A Lonely Place to Die

A Lonely Place to Die is directed by Julian Gilbey.

Five mountaineers are hiking the Scottish Highlands. They come across a young Serbian girl who seems entrapped in a small chamber in that lonely place. When they try to rescue the girl, her kidnappers start chasing them.

6. The Divide

The Divide is directed by Xavier Gens.

The few survivors of a nuclear attack are entrapped in the basement of the apartment building they live in. With passing time and declining resources, people slowly start losing their courage.

7. Grave Encounters

Grave Encounters is directed by The Vicious Brothers.

The production crew of a Ghost Reality Show is determined to shoot their next episode in the Collingwood Psychiatric Hospital. The hospital is rumored to be haunted. Very soon the crew of Grave Encounters Reality Show realizes they have run a big risk.

8. The Rite

The Rite is directed by Mikael Hafstrom.

It is always difficult to list out 10 best love movies. It is often so because some movies make an eternal imprint upon our minds and it becomes difficult for us to give chance to newer entrants. Most of these romantic movies and the characters in them become a part of our lives. I cannot assure that these are the 10 best all time Romantic movies the world has witnessed. But each of these movies has aroused many unspoken emotions. They have plucked the chords within and have coaxed me to loyally watch them with the same fondness even after years!

1.    Gone with the Wind

This 10 time Academy award winner starring Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh continues to be a romantic favorite the world over. Even after seventy years, people continue to identify with the romance of Southern belle, Scarlet O’Hara and the vice Rhett Butler during the Civil War.

2.    Casablanca

I am sure most of you might have not forgotten this movie starring Ingrid Bergman and Humphrey Bogart. The movie is a medley of love, lust and heroism. Casablanca movie reminds us of the choices a woman had to make when desire and morality came face to face. In the film Bogart left his love for the sake of his marriage and this till date is among the best farewell scenes ever.

7.    An Officer and a Gentleman

This romantic movie starring Debra Winger and Richard Gere explores the true ups and downs of any relation. It is about an individual who realizes his inner strength after he enters an office. This is yet another recent movie in the list of memorable romantic movies. It captivates inspite of using age-old love related bonding, separation, betrayal and such formulae. Ryan Gosling and Rachel Mac Adams have played their roles well.

Ever After is a modern Cinderella tale with some new twists in it. Drew Barrymore plays an angelic Cinderella while Anjelica Houston plays the evil step-mother.

10.   Love Story

This romantic movie showcases the sacrifices of two lovebirds. The role is heart touchingly portrayed by Ali Mc Graw and Ryan O’Neal.
