Review of Blade Runner (1982)

No List of Science Fiction, Action or Adventure Films can ever be complete without including Blade Runner in the list. It is one of the finest creations of Ridley Scott.  It is roughly based on Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep by the author Philip K Dick.  The film was not a great success when it was initially released as it was overshadowed by few other sci-fi releases of that time which include Star Trek II: The Wrath of The Khan, The Thing and even more significantly E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial which were also in theaters around the same time.

Ridley Scott, who had earlier gifted the audience with brilliant works like Alien, in 1982 created a marvelous science fiction Blade Runner in 1982. It was one of his best creations. Deckard who is a blade runner, must hunt down and eliminate four replicants who have hijacked a ship in space and now have came back to the planet looking for their maker.  In a cyberpunk perspective into the future, a man has evolved a technology to generate replicants, human clones employed to work in the colonies outside Earth though with set lifespans. In Los Angeles, 2019, Deckard is a Blade Runner, a cop who specializes in ending replicants. Actually in retirement, he is compelled to re-enter the force as half a dozen replicants get away from an off world community to Earth.

Best Scene:

The film Blade Runner has got many spectacular scenes which will be remembered even after years. Deckard’s pursuit of Zhora has been really shot very well. Another scene worth remembering is Batty’s meeting with Tyrell. There are many more such fabulous scenes. Even the climax of the Blade Runner has been shot very well.

Box Office: The film was not a great success when it initially released in 1982. However the film withstood the test of time. In the opening weekend, it made a disappointing US $6.15 M and by the end of 1982 it grossed a total of US $27.58 M.

Awards:

The film Blade Runner was nominated for eight BAFTA Awards and won three of them. It won the BAFTA Award for Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design and Best Art Direction. It also won the Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation and London Critic’s Circle Special Achievement Award.

Sequels:

There were three sequels made to the original 1982 Blade Runner. These include Blade Runner 2: The Edge of Human (1995),Blade Runner 3: Replicant Night (1996) and Blade Runner 4: Eye and Talon (2000).
